Fueling Her Fire by Piper Trace5/30/2023 ![]() It is quite short.I think Ellora's Cave books are often pricey though. I will say on a completely unrelated note from the review that almost $5 for this novella is high. ![]() This one seemed a little more on the mild side. At least in my fantasies, lumberjack's are gruff and brawny. I do wish Dylan would have been a little uff. If you like the lumberjack fantasy, this one is hot and sexy. *grins* This would have been a fun little story to read right around Christmas time. He went on to write screenplays, even winning an Academy Award for Meet John Doe in 1941.Īnd his story? Well, it has inspired filmmakers, paintball, The Simpsons, and Gilligan's Island. Henry Prize, a short story award that's still given out today.Ĭonnell's short story career peaked with "The Most Dangerous Game," but his career wasn't over. “The Most Dangerous Game” first appeared in Collier’s Weekly in 1924, which is kind of like reading it in the New Yorker today. And students love it, because it's, well, super creepy and weird. Teachers love it, because it's got a classic short story structure and lots of great irony. ![]() Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” (or “The Hounds of Zaroff” if you want to be different) is one of the most popular short stories written in English. Who wins out? We'll give you a hint: " What's up, doc?" Have you seen this one? Well, now imagine that, instead of a soccer ball, he encounters a Cossack psychopath/exotic serial killer named General Zaroff, who proceeds to hunt him like a smarter, crueler Elmer Fudd. Trust no auntie5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() What struck me about this quote is the fact that emotional abusers are very passive, very subtle, very quiet. So the impact is gradual, not fist-to-the-eye immediate. Their covert abuse is administered in small, cunning ways over time. And appear nothing but supportive to those around you. They may, in fact, speak very kind words to you. ![]() What I had discovered in those precise few moments, was the exact description for the subtle abuse I was, and still am, facing from my estranged parents. The words settled like lead inside of my head. ![]() Emotional abuse? This concept was something completely new to me. It was after reading the above passage in a book I recently completed by Augusten Burroughs that I stopped dead in my tracks. Emotional violence is another kind of abuse … it’s not about words because an emotionally abusive person doesn’t always resort to using the verbal club, but rather the verbal untraceable poison. ![]()

Kissing Comfort by Jo Goodman5/30/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() One grounds me in reality and the other offers a break from it.Īfter finishing this book, I can say with all certainty that it has been much too long since I read a Jo Goodman. I am currently the executive director of a child caring/mental health agency and find my work and my writing often compliment each other. I began working with adolescents and families, first as a childcare worker and later, after graduating from West Virginia University with a master's degree in counseling, as a therapist. Years of competitive swimming didn't help me anticipate seasickness. I graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a major in biology and a minor in chemistry and some notion that I would do marine research. ![]() They bought me an electric typewriter and crossed their fingers, but somehow PASSION'S BRIDE came out. My supportive, but vaguely concerned parents, sighed with relief when I announced I was going to write children's books. ![]() There was also a story about a runaway girl with the unlikely name of Strawberry and one about mistaken identities and an evil blind date. In seventh grade I wrote a melodrama about two orphan sisters, one of whom was pregnant. I was in fourth grade, but it was a start. To find characters to illustrate my first family saga, I cut out models from the Sears catalogue. ![]()

The knight and the dove lori wick5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() I cannot express how fantastic this novel is!! This is definitely one of my favourite novels a real comfort read. It seems so intriguing and I would love to visit it if I could. I also fell in love with the setting especially Hawkings Crest. The secondary characters were also delightful! I would love to see all of them find love, especially Stephen and Arik. The dialogues were witty and interesting and the plot also had a few unexpected twists. ![]() The way he treats Meg is so sweet! My heart literally clenched in agony every time they experienced a problem. Bracken is a stoic, but lovely character. Meg is so strong and beautiful, but when her vulnerable side peeks out, you can't help but adore her even more. ![]() In some novels, the romance is a bit rushed or forced or overdramatic, but the way that their relationship is explored and developed is incredible. Their relationship is so lovely!! The author has made the relationship very believable. Megan and Bracken are the main reason I repeatedly read this novel. Phenomenal!! An absolutely delightful end to the series!! I've re-read this so many times I've lost count, and every single time, I fall even more in love with it. ![]()
